“if you’re a white person, it may come as a surprise to you that the rest of us are thinking a few things about you we choose not to say. kamau helps by finding a white guy who’ll listen— we’d say it’s about dialogue or whatever, but it’s really just for fun.”

Fola, Her Religion 2013
“This has to be one of my favourites so far. It’s called Her Religion, because I was going back to The Bible, thinking what if Mary was a black woman – who says she’s not, let’s just say… What if God was actually Mother Nature, and the baby that came out of that union wasn’t Jesus [as we know him] but a woman who’ll become a mother. I say this because our mothers are willing to go on that cross for us, they’re willing to give us everything, they’re willing to forgive us and that’s what Jesus is all about. So I placed this little baby in black Mary’s arms. She’s Jesus and she’s nurturing. You see, she’s already given birth to flowers and she doesn’t even know it: that’s how powerful she is about to be.”
i saw this interview with folasade adeoso, also known as fola, on www.okayafrica.com and was immediately drawn to this image. isn’t her description just as epic as the picture? fola is a nigerian canadian model, “online sensation,” and artist. check out the rest of the interview and more of her work here.

“the central park five tells the story of the five black and latino teenagers from harlem who were wrongly convicted of raping a white woman in new york city’s central park in 1989. the film chronicles the central park jogger case, for the first time from the perspective of these five teenagers whose lives were upended by this miscarriage of justice.” if you’re like me and you didn’t catch this documentary when it aired on pbs the other night, watch it here.

i’m totally having deja vu! because we just had this conversation not even 2 months ago! why, why, why is blackface still a thing in 2013?! why instead of getting white people to mimic black beauty, don’t you just employ a black model?! let’s be clear and i feel like a fashion magazine should know (and does know) that blackface always looks bad. like the aesthetic intentions are completely overshadowed by this fuckin ridiculous makeup! so who is the culprit this time? vogue netherlands. the spread is intended to honor the work of marc jacobs and is inspired by black style icons like grace jones and josephine baker. the model even wears a wig to imitate the texture of “black” hair. some people argue that this is art, therefore open to artistic license and that this sort of thing is acceptable in dutch culture. i think that’s bullshit and an easy way to ignore the fact that the worldwide fashion industry has an aversion to not only black models, but to all models that aren’t white. what do you think? read more here.

remember haiti? photographer giles clarke recently completed a photo essay documenting how people are living 3 years after a massive hurricane hit the country. despite the 12,000 NGO groups currently registered in haiti, it still remains the poorest country in the western hemisphere. check out the rest of the pictures and commentary here.
